was not always what it seemed to be,

for a brief time in 2009 between the Spring screening of SPECULATION(ELATION)2 and the Fall exhibition HHORRRAUTICA 4:(CRYPTO) there existed another curation event not shared with the public. This variable experience existed for only two days inside 362 Dwight Street, known then as Lake Hitchcock Center for the Arts. After re-contacting all of the participants it was decided that the RETCON projects would be shared sometime in the nearest future. We would like to give a special thanks to George Kuchar who inspired the first RETCON gathering and who now has prompted that this new continuity be rebooted.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT
video_dumbo is the annual festival of international contemporary video art. This year video_dumbo will be held on September 23-25th as part of the 2011 Dumbo Arts Festival.

We are proud to present 67 artists from 27 different countries, a number of NY/East Coast and world premieres, including works from places as remote as Chittagong, Bangladesh and Tripoli, Lebanon.

For the past seven years, video_dumbo has been an important exhibition platform for emerging filmmaker and media artists. In our continuing mission to exhibit rarely seen video art, we present a growing selection of international, thought-provoking works to our audience.

Last year, video_dumbo was described as the most outstanding and best curated event of the Dumbo Arts Festival 2010 by the 18-person festival jury of NYC-based arts professionals.

Highlights this year include eight installations under the exhibition title QUASI CINEMA, featuring works that re-appropriate film technology as well as cinematic metaphors. Exhibition artists include Leslie Thornton, Aram Bartholl, Ernesto Klar, Ali Miharbi, Naho Taruishi, Andy Graydon and Ken Jacobs. Plus, there will be an introduction by the Boston-based media art DVD magazine "Aspect," as well as a special DVD release of the video duo HALFLIFERS.

Why we are doing a Kickstarter campaign:
After more than 7 years of continuous local and foundation funding, due to budget cuts, this is the very first time video_dumbo's basic funding is not secured. This is when we call on supporters like you to help us to continue presenting fabulous video art!
Over the last five years we have managed to present this volunteer-produced 3-day event without charging entrance fees to our audience, and we are committed to keeping it this way. Please help us to do so!

* keep the promise to present contemporary video art from noon to midnight - an exciting scope of both local and international video art.
* present spectacular installations that juxtapose international and local artists, giving the artists the opportunity to present their work to a large audience.

LIKE Jackass FOR THE GUGGENHEIM,
Anthony Discenza and Torsten Zenas Burns's
collaborative project, Halflifers, is a lo-fi series of Knoxville-esque camcorder stunts wrapped up in arts-grant language. "An ordinary domestic setting is recast as a psychoactive landscape in which the concept of function becomes situational and fluid." Translation: they smear food on each other in the kitchen. With a proclivity for hazmat suits, the media art duo perform poorly staged action scenes that repeatedly disintegrate into accidental slapstick. But their series, Afterlifers: Walking & Talking, with the duo playing zombies in a riff on Romero, achieves real frisson. Footage of the things zombies get up to when no one's watching is interwoven with a dead-on parody of the end-of-the-world panel discussions from Dawn of the Dead. It's proof that while zombie movies may have moved from the grindhouse to the arthouse, no amount of irony can prevent the image of the zombie from instilling viewers with Pavlovian dread.

Strange Attractors: Investigations in Non-Humanoid Extraterrestrial Sexualities

A nearly 300 page, full color book and DVD containing art, writing, and film that envisions the sexualities of beings that may some day be encountered – if not in outer space than at least in our dreams! A joint publication byEncyclopedia Destructica and the The Institute of Extraterrestrial Sexuality, this project will publish the work of 69 artists, writers and filmmakers who have created an amazing range of expressions that expand our conception of the possibilities of alien life forms and the nature of sexual desire. Strange Attractors straddles the line between a speculative scientific exploration and a work of artistic imagination and creativity.

While science fiction literature and film have often touched on alien sexuality, these encounters are almost always represented as between a human and a humanoid alien. Gender is almost always portrayed as binary even when it is homosexual. Sexual encounters consist primarily of engagements between two beings. Inspired by Kepler’s (kepler.nasa.gov) voyage into deep space on a quest for earth-like planets, this project has gone beyond male and female, beyond queer, beyond any notion of gender, beyond the anthropomorphic to erotic possibilities as vastly varied as the universe itself. Discover what kinds of sentient beings, what types of sexualities, how many erogenous zones and types of erotic pleasure might exist out there in the universe!

During its 30+ years of existence, the San Francisco Art Institute’s New Genres (formerly Performance/Video) department has produced innumerable high-caliber artists and has influenced performance and conceptual art on a global scale. Simultaneously, the department’s commitment to maintaining state-of-the-art production facilities has contributed to an equally impressive output from myriad film- and video makers. Tonight’s program presents a survey of this important work. While as aggressive and sophisticated as their performance counterpart, the work of these artists displays an equally ingenious and ground-breaking visual language and deals with such varied issues as formalism, feminism, abstract narrative, transgressive sexuality, personal biography and body politics. And, drawn from three decades of activity, the program comprises an historical microcosm of video technology, beginning with industrial and broadcast cameras and behemoth Portapaks through the Hi-8 video revolution, “cuts-only” editing, the Amiga Toaster and Avid systems, up to DV’s utopian technological plateau. Join us for an evening of the early works and rarities of some of the field’s major artists, including Jordan Biren, Nao Bustamante, Monet Clark, Torsten Zenas Burns, Cecilia Dougherty, Didi Dunphy, Dale Hoyt, Andrew Huestis, Tony Labat, Jennifer Locke, Anne McGuire, Guy Overfelt and Emjay Wilson. For one night only, the HalfLifers will repurpose Thomas Faulders’s BAMscapeas an omnidirectional, construction-colored exploration vehicle, navigating a 360-degree journey into the interior reaches of HalfLifers’s “videonic” backlog of afterlife relationships, rescue rituals, and psychic manifestations. This spatio-temporal hub will sync up with other portable pictographic projections by longtime friends and collaborators of the HalfLifers, including Anne McGuire, Darrin Martin, Jordan Biren, Ursula Brookbank, Christian Burns, and Animal Charm. The celebration will be consummated with an anthro-engineered dough object—by which we mean a sugar-frosted biomemory conduit activated by physical ingestion.

By the mid-seventies, the concept of the artist’s body as medium had evolved from arid performance to effusive provocation. Tony Labat emerged in 1977 with the remarkable series Solo Flight in which the artist’s identity is given sudden form through subtle ethnic gestures. With pithy performances like Laurie Sings Iggy and the Madonna Series, Leslie Singer took on the celebrity industry with an economy of parodic impersonation and food flinging. In These Are the Rules, Doug Hall enacted an authoritarian pose to deflate the power vested in political symbols. Where Cecilia Dougherty dismisses the patrimony of past mentors with her remake of Howard Fried’s Fuck You, Purdue, Jordan Biren reinstates The Body as a nervous engine of desire. A common art-making strategy when one enters into new territory is to listen, to ask, and to wait. As newcomers to Abu Dhabi, we considered this strategy, but then rejected it. Instead of waiting to receive information, we begin our sojourn in the Emirates by making an offer. In curating this show, No Customs, held in our remarkably gallery like living space, we offer the work of artists connected to us from our home community of New York City. When they asked what life is like here, we answered we didn’t yet know. We told them to send what they could send via email, via instructions, via concept. We told them to send it fast. So then, what we have is a show called No Customs. This title is a double entendre. Practically, since no objects have been mailed, we were not slowed by the expense of shipping and the delays of customs. Metaphorically, the show is not about tradition or interpretation, but rather about mapping and transcription. How does form map onto landscape? How does it transform landscape? How do you demarcate space for contemplation, for understanding, for revolution? What happens to the body when its image occupies this demarcated space?

Landscape
First, the approach to a problem. This is what we hear when listening to Vito Acconci’s audio piece, Research Station, Antarctica, For Your Ears Only (2004-2010). How does an artist (here architect) turn a landscape into a series of constraints to be addressed, to create a form? In the photographs of Melissa Dubbin and Aaron Davidson, the long time collaborators use smoke bombs to test the landscape. They create form with weather, wind, light, and clouds. In a site specific project by Thomas Lail, a series of Buckminister Fuller domes are superimposed over the city view of Abu Dhabi, creating another take on the domes of the city and adding to the enormous architectural speculation already here. In another project, a memory sequence of images by Tara Fracalossi offers a counterpoint to the desert with images of most verdant spring and bleakest winter. These images purport to be memory, but their repetition on the wall creates matrices of classifications that map new space. In the end they are more like letters in an alphabet than like stories of particular landscapes.

Demarcated space
In answering a call to show work in Abu Dhabi, many artists considered the question of mapping, both graphically and metaphorically. In the work of Michael Mandiberg, the artist asked us to find an Arabic map of the USA in which we recreate the laser cuttings of print media that he is known for. In this work the message and the map collide. The artist duo MTAA and the sculptor Sara Hubbs sent ideas for works that, though they are generated very differently, come up with surprisingly congruent projects. MTAA asked us to find “the most colorful place” in Abu Dhabi. Then they provided software that translated this image into an abstract digital image (referred to as “the aesthetic object”). We could then display this any way we saw fit. In Sara Hubb’s project, an abstract form also results from a behind the scenes process. She photographed decaying areas of New York City and asked us to reproduce the patterns they create in plaster, building up a surface to form decoration from blight.
The projects of Jonathan Schipper and the collaborative team of Jennifer Dalton and Susan Hamburger ask us the audience to participate in the creation of the artwork by zeroing in on our patterns of behavior. In the ambitious project by Schipper, entitled A Million Dollar Walk, attendees of the opening reception will be given the opportunity to carry a briefcase full of money on a prescribed path through the building. Dalton and Hamburger ask participants questions about their behavior in Abu Dhabi, creating a changing sculptural bar graph that measures their assumptions about life in the capitol against actual practice.
Four artists in the exhibition deal with space by creating voids some for the viewer to inhabit speculatively others by creating spaces for lost objects. In her video mixtape project, Marisa Olson casts herself as an outsourced worker and creates a mash-up of Arab covers of American karaoke classics. The singers of course, are us by implication. In The New Revolution (2010), Mark Tribe creates an installation that invites spectators to consider their own ideas about revolution. David Grubbs, a noted musician, sent us instructions to render a beautiful wall drawing whose omissions create open spaces for meaning to drift. In an animation by Karen Yasinsky, You’d Better Be Careful, omitted objects and spaces set interpretation even farther adrift.

Bodies
Several of the artists in the show responded with work implying performative space. In the video Double Face Fantasy by Jason Robert Bell and Marni Kotak this space is a virtual one in that a portrait transforms through a technical gesture. Anthony Discenza’s video, The Future has Already Been Written creates a tour de force collage of science fiction, and we follow the body of Charlton Heston through alternate visions of the future. In the work of Torsten Zenas Burns, Resurrectables (Yellow-Mobilers), the artist asked us to curate a selection of performance stills from a huge array of images of costumes, props, and locations. We selected images of vehicles, conveying transmission, speed, and the framing of the body as it moves through space. Finally, the work of photographer Bill Durgin presents work that brings it all together. The body becomes a landscape of skin, finally an abstracted “aesthetic object”.

Jennifer and Kevin McCoy's multimedia artworks examine the genres and conventions of filmmaking, memory and language. They are known for constructing subjective databases of existing material and making fragmentary miniature film sets with lights, video cameras, and moving sculptural elements to create live cinematic events. They have relocated to Abu Dhabi in affiliation with New York University Abu Dhabi and are presently teaching and working on a commission for the downtown campus.

The San Francisco Bay Area has been home to a thriving and prominent film and videomaking community since at least the 1940s. Of this larger community, a substantial subset of artists, innovators, and experimentalists has pursued alternative forms of visual expression that have influenced other artists far beyond our foggy enclave. The rich history of this alternative practice is explored in the new book Radical Light, published jointly by UC Press and the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. Through our research efforts to synthesize the artistic output of this diverse group of film and video artists, BAM/PFA has amassed a collection of rare “ephemeral” materials that often represent the remaining traces of what were vital manifestations of the Bay Area media community, its artists, as well as its pedagogical institutions and exhibition venues. These overlooked, often visually striking, archival materials come in the form of posters for bygone cinema screenings, newsletters from extant and now-defunct media organizations, production stills from seminal films that capture the time of their making, historical correspondence by renowned artists, and many other artifacts that encapsulate a half-century’s media culture. Of additional interest, nearly a dozen artist-made collages and drawings commissioned for Radical Light will be displayed in their original form. A special sidebar focuses on the microcinema movement that emerged full-force in the early 1990s and which is attributed to the prophetic inspiration of several Bay Area curators who showed films in intimate settings beginning in the late 1970s. Organized as a loose timeline along the walls of the Theater Gallery, hundreds of discrete paper relics evoke the graphical playfulness and diverse means that sustained a still-flourishing community of alternative media artists.

The Experimental Television Center is pleased to announce the upcoming release of ETC: Experimental Television Center 1969-2009, a five DVD set presenting the electronic media work of over one hundred artists who have worked in the Center’s Residency Program during the last 40 years. The collection offers a look at the evolution of the unique artist-designed sound and image tools that are the hallmark of the Center’s studio and provides a view into the constantly changing artistic processes and practices that have shaped the work over the years. The set is being distributed by Electronic Arts Intermix.

Video art began to develop in the US in the late 1960s, with the introduction of new portable video tools. While many artists used the technology to document and have voice in social and political issues, others collaborated with technologists to design unique instruments which allowed the creation of imagery never before seen. ETC remains dedicated to the development of video and digital instruments in the service of creative visual and sonic investigation by artists from around the world.

This set contains works by the first generation of video and film artists – including Barbara Hammer, Gary Hill, Jud Yalkut and Aldo Tambellini - as well as contemporary works by Marisa Olson, Kristin Lucas, Lynne Sachs and Mark Street. The complete list of artists is below. A 132 page catalog is also included. The works have been widely exhibited internationally and received awards from festivals around the world.

For about 40 years the Center has offered programs in support of the media arts, offering an international residency Program, grants to individuals and media organizations, and sponsorship assistance for independent media and film artists. The Video History Web is an online resource for scholars concerning the formative development of media art and community television.

An essential component of the project, the digitizing of early video works recorded on obsolete formats, was performed through the Standby Program by Bill Seery. We also wish to recognize Maria Venuto and Kelly Spivey for their contributions. The newly digitized ETC works are archived at Cornell University Rose Goldsen Archive of New Media, to be made available to the public for research purposes.

This project has received support from the Digitization Project Grants Program at the New York State Council on the Arts, mediaThe foundation, and the Daniel Langlois Foundation for Art, Science and Technology. Untethered to institutions of sexual or gender normativity and in pursuit of greater freedoms, the work in this exhibition represents queer activism, intentional and imagined communities, self-determinism, and DIY alternative world-making.

Suggestions of Life Being Lived begins from a place of ‘outness’ and considers how a sense of liberated queerness is pursued and mediated within public spaces and behaviors. Less concerned with catergorical sexual identities or coming-out narratives, this exhibition presents work that looks outward towards collective and resistant expressions of queer community existing outside of dominant gay and lesbian culture.

For once, we encourage you to bring your cell phones to a screening so that you can participate in an evening of new video performance, as well as solo and collaborative video works from Darrin Martin. Failed utopias, technologic euphoria, role-playing workshops, hearing loss, the nature of sound, and other actualities often inaccessible to the naked eye are playfully addressed in this presentation by Darrin Martin. Fantasy and delusion through a language of disjointed architectural ruins and sculptural remains fuse with his current research into ubiquitous technologies in a premiere of the video-performance, Fragments. A screening of his most recent solo works and collaborations with Torsten Zenas Burns, an experimental video artist, will precede the performance.

Darrin Martin is a Bay Area artist whose works loosely examine how technologies are used in an attempt to measure and augment our daily perceptions. Martin’s collaborations with Torsten Zenas Burns build diverse speculative fictions around re-imagined educational paradigms. Martin has toured his work nationally and internationally. Krowswork Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition What If? In the Days When the Tiger Smoked, a collaboration between veteran video artists Torsten Zenas Burns and Darrin Martin. The exhibition includes four videos and accompanying prints and photographs and is the culmination of an ongoing project which began in Busan, South Korea, in 2006. The first part of the title - "What If?" - sets the tone for both the scientific and speculative nature of the artists' point of departure. The second part - "In the Days When the Tiger Smoked" - is the Korean equivalent of "Once Upon a Time," suggesting an event set in a mythical time. This juxtaposition of the exciting, unknown possibilities of "future" with the playful, whimsy of a fictional "past" provides a perfect capsule for this uniquely complex narrative of the imaginative present.

What If? In the Days When the Tiger Smoked represents video art at its most engaged-an exploration of the medium's outer limits, complexities, and crevices. Alternately funny, bizarre, and profound, the works are colorful, both literally and metaphorically, and use video to do what it does best: push and question boundaries.

At the heart of What If? is the unfolding of a role-playing workshop where participants reenact dates leading up to a fictional polyamorous romance. The performance, played by a rotating international cast of artists, culminates in a group wedding and honeymoon between characters based on two obscure Marvel superheroes and two internationally renowned art personalities. What-If? reveals the entangled story that brought this romantic foursome together, spanning the gulf between genders and representations, the body and technology.

Part live action and part animation, equally plastic and organic, and using bodies as physical and philosophical vehicles to question our sense of self at its palpable essence, the presentation of What If? at Krowswork Gallery reminds us that identity, like video itself, can be almost anything we want it to be.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Burns and Martin met in the 1980s when they were both studying art at Alfred University, an unsuspected center of early video activity and experimentation and one of the oldest video art programs in the country. Each of them has been working in the medium of video for twenty years, individually and collaboratively. Together, they have based their single-channel videotapes, curations and current performance works on their research into diverse séance-fictions including re-imagined educational practices, cryptozoological musicals, and transhuman narratives. They have jointly participated in residencies at Eyebeam and The Experimental Television Center in New York. Their videos have screened at venues including The Museum of Art and Design (NY), Pacific Film Archive (CA), Aurora Picture Show (TX), Migrating Forms (NY), Video_Dumbo (NY), Chicago Underground Film Festival (IL), Madrid Museum of Contemporary Art (Spain), Stuttgart Filmwinter (Germany), Art Space Bandee (South Korea), and Oberhausen Short Film and Video Festival (Germany). They most recently screened their work at the 2010 edition of the European Media Arts Festival (Germany) and exhibited at The Lab in San Francisco.

With All That Passes Before You, Already In Ruin, Jordan Biren brings a performative incursion to his long-standing ordeal in video. Through live recitation of text the physicality of words is loosed upon an intimate expanse of high-definition imagery and sound. A rich, temporal presence ensues of transient landscapes, time, and characters advancing as spectres in the shadows of glistening cinematic moments. Words—displaced from the image—move as ghostly figures through the illusory promise of narrative towards a question of alterity. In his ongoing performances of All That Passes Before You, Already In Ruin, Biren abandons suggestions of cinematic sense for a resonance carried on the frequency of bodily words.

Is an artist for whom video is the poetic rehearsal of his artistic endeavor.
His work has long pondered meaning as a migration behind the illusory promise of narrative utterance. His is work of a melancholic tension built around narrative dissolutions in the chasms of granular image, text, and sound. Narrative, rather, has inhered in his video as a vaporous impossibility against which the work is directed. He seeks in this the more enigmatic holes of unexplained human experience—those breaches covered over, as if unsightly, by the image, sound, and textual impulses of an arbitrary existence. Of late, his work has approached an equivalence of film aesthetic against which notions of video define a new, hybrid form of narrative province.

Our last project, entitled “What-If? ”, was generated through a series of role playing workshops that enacted a romance between four characters based upon two obscure Marvel superheroes and two internationally renowned art personalities. The performances,conducted by an international cast of artists,leads to a group wedding. The happy foursome are Orlan, an artist whose actual redefinition of her own body via plastic surgery confronts representations of woman throughout art history; Stelarc, an artist whose cybernetic mission in life is to render the body obsolete; Scarlet Witch, a mutant superhero who has unlimited powers over probability,and Vision, a “synthezoid” superhero whose mechanically fabricated body contains a human soul.“What-If? Traversing through the worlds of Choreography, Performance, Video, and New Media, he explores the realms of performed identity through fantasy characters and has an interest in re-envisioning educational spaces. Often creating animated counterparts of his collaborators, TZB creates spaces where kinesthetics meets virtual life. For example, WHAT IF?BEYOND A CARNALOVE, made with longtime collaborator, Darrin Martin utilizes danceforms software that recreates choreography by Merce Cunningham. What began as a loose network of artist collectives is evolving into a vibrant new gallery district that has, in the last three years, established a reputation for making challenging art accessible to a broad public of viewers and collectors. These galleries provide an important forum for emerging artists, including students and graduates of UC Berkeley’s Art Practice program, as they are the first point of entry into the professional landscape for so many young talents. These spaces, in the backyard of Berkeley’s campus, also provide experiential learning opportunities for art students and art appreciators from throughout our community.

Krowswork inaugurates its program with “As X → ∞” (As X Approaches Infinity),* an exhibition of videos and photographs that explores ideas of the infinite, divinity, and the leap between reason and faith as a natural expression of the mediums themselves. Because they are “reality” based and poised at the intersection of the mechanical and the conceptual, video and photography are uniquely suited to emulate and traverse these philosophical pathways. In “As X → ∞” the artists record their specific engagement with the infinite as either direct references to spiritual or ritualized experiences, abstracted allusions to cosmic forms, or playful, elliptical manifestations of the paradox of attempting the approach at all, affirming Kierkegaard’s belief that “the only thing that can save [man] is the absurd, and this he grasps by faith.”
In the screening room, we will feature a 20-minute looped program of videos ranging from 21 seconds to 4 minutes with works by Usuna & Kristie Alshaibi, Animal Charm, Nate Boyce, Torsten Zenas Burns, Volkan Ergen, Sabine Gruffat, Kaliptus, Jason Livingston, Austin Muller, and Aaron Oldenburg. Though conceived individually, the works are curated to be seen together, presenting a complete meditation on the show’s subject. Visitors to the gallery are welcome to a cup of tea or coffee while they watch. Hundred-year-old oak pews with velvet cushions serve as seating and set the tone for a unique experience.
In the project room are an installation and video by RKDB which explore divination and ritual from the eyes of a clown-shaman. Also on view in the exhibition space is the work of five photographers: Gigi Gatewood, Adam Wier, Paula Catao, Walker Dukes, and Lauren Orchowski, whose works approach infinity from the perspective of the sacred, the profane, the fanciful, the ritualized, and the cosmic, respectively.

Starting in the 1980s, entrepreneurial operators traveled with video recorders and TV sets to rural Ghanaian villages. Creating makeshift movie houses, often in tents or open air cinemas, they showed violent and often bloodthirsty films on televisions run with generators. Though many were films from America and Asia, most of the posters seen in this exhibition were created to promote the Nigerian made films. Hand painted on the backs of flour sacks by local Ghanaian artists they combine elements of traditional African art and modernity. The artists, in their own styles, often painted these posters before seeing the film themselves. Sometimes they referenced images from the accompanying tape jackets to create these bold and often gruesome advertisements. Many of the images are purely from the artists imagination and may not appear in the film at all. The more shocking the poster, the more likely a show would sell seats. The canvases are tattered and faded from their use to promote the movie as it traveled from village to village. Some of the flour sacking labels bleed through to the front, and some have stitching or patches of odd cloth. This intriguing twist on form and function only adds to the beauty of this dying art.

Today mass- produced paper posters are replacing the hand-painted posters in Ghana. This exhibition offers a peek into that disappearing art form as well as an opportunity to purchase the work. Each poster will be available for sale for $350.00.

Michelle Gilbert teaches anthropology and art history at Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville, NY. Since 1976 she has done fieldwork in an Akan kingdom of southern Ghana on art, religion and politics on which she has written many articles.

I am today’s lesson plan is a unique edit of Burn’s and
Martin’s epic LearningStalls: Lesson Plans, which utilizes
video as a trans-disciplinary curriculum exploring
diverse speculative fictions and reimagined educational
practices. Psychic surgery meets physical therapy as matter
and anti-matter merge under the choreographed supervision
of other worldly beings. In the search for new mind/body
experiences, Burns, Martin and other workshop participants
enact paranormal interactions, intersexual dynamics,
pseudo-testing methods, and staged quasi-therapy sessions.

Dada artist Kurt Schwitters’s classic “Sonata In Primeval Sounds,” also called “Ursonate,” is performed by Ursonate Urchestra, with Lead Parachute and special guest Mitch Ahern, as part of GonzoQuest’s Final Fridays Open Mike Night, on Friday, May 29th at 8pm, Paper City Studios, 80 Race Street, in Holyoke. The open mike, interspersed with “Ursonata” movements, features performance poets, artists with slideshows, and musicians: sign up at 7:30pm.

Published in 1932, Kurt Schwitters’ “Sonata In Primeval Sounds”–also called “Ursonate”–is the granddaddy of sound-art poems: a 45-minute nonsense opus that develops 26 abstract themes in sonata form. Ursonate Urchestra co-founder Andy Laties’ rousing participatory interpretations were honored in Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art’s “Chicago Artists 1945-1995″ retrospective. His partners in Ursonate Urchestra are vocalist Rebecca Migdal and percussionist Eric Blitz; they are joined tonight by experimental sound ensemble Lead Parachute, featuring John Landino on trombone, Glove on guitar and tape measure, and Denis Luzuriaga on synthesizers. Invented-instrument maker Mitch Ahern rounds out the show with his electroluxo-pipophone.

As if that weren’t fabulous enough, this Friday Torsten Zenas Burns will screen a work-in-progress video project that he is creating in collaboration with students in Korea. Torsten writes:

“Scenes in KOREANAUTICA explore re-imagined space training workshops, gestural relationships, sculptural set-ups, and micro / macro vehicle delivery systems. Further scenes investigate diverse medical treatments, rituals, superstitions, sexuality, hygiene, manifestations, humor and the creative arts aboard a fictional international Korean space station. The last collection of footage is appropriated from NASA-TV, capturing months of the 2008 training and the launching of the 1st female Korean astronaut.”

"If one desired to subvert cultural homogeny, eccentric behavior might be a practice worth pursuing. An exuberance of tics, gestures exaggerated, a histrionic of historic proportion, these characteristics can account for a performative presence that resists uniformity while shedding expectation. The works in this cavalcade of the unconventional represent a brand of artist-bound performance that promotes the peculiar, thrives on half-digested narrative, and places the artist, or, at least, a proxy, in a delirious universe of manic materiality. The settings for these performances brim with objects and surfaces that acquire uncanny meaning as the artists move about in frantic exhortation. These are not performances linked to the seventies when artists demanded great attentiveness to the minutiae of the everyday. Rather, here, the artist's presence is just the starting point for an artful journey of sly incantation, physical verve, and pop criticality.
